issigak – in Jan Klopfleisch

Issigak (inuit: snow goggles) These carved goggles were worn by Eskimos.
A narrow slit casting a shadow enabled Eskimos to look at the landscape in total brightness while framed in shadow.
in - (jap.: grounds) word often used in Japanese for Gardens and Temple grounds

The project „issigak-in“ brings together painting architecture and artificial landscapes in an optical/physical room of perception. It consists of elements/concepts pertaining to Japanese tea rooms, tea and dry garden. The nucleus of the installation is a modular space, which is a tea house – a living space created for communication and contemplation.

„issigak“ is the title of strip painting series – systematically stacked black and white material – to which colour is applied with
a snow effect. This painting is concrete and links landscapes.

„Issigak-in“ is embedded in a three-dimensional dynamic framework of
relationships consisting of proportions, surfaces, and rhythms in order to create an artificial landscape, which in turn produces a whole scope of questions on living space/room and the location itself of the painting.
